Elders of SouthGate

Our Elders play a vital role in the life of the church as spiritual leaders, overseers, and shepherds. They are called to guide, protect, and nurture the congregation with wisdom, integrity, and humility.

Key Responsibilities

🕊️ Spiritual Leadership

Elders provide spiritual direction by teaching and preaching the Word of God, helping to ensure the congregation remains rooted in sound doctrine.

“He must be able to teach… holding firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught.” 1 Timothy 3:2, Titus 1:9

🛠️ Oversight & Governance

Elders help oversee the mission and vision of the church, making decisions that align with biblical values and support the church’s growth and direction.

“Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock… Be shepherds of the church of God.” Acts 20:28, Titus 1:7

🐑 Shepherding the Congregation

Elders care for the spiritual well-being of church members, protecting them from false teaching and providing encouragement, counsel, and accountability.

“Be shepherds of God’s flock… not lording it over those entrusted to you but being examples to the flock.” 1 Peter 5:2-4

🙏 Prayer & Support

Elders are committed to prayer—especially interceding for those in need—and to walking alongside people in their faith journey.

“Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders… and pray over them.” James 5:14

🤝 Conflict Resolution

Elders serve as peacemakers when disputes arise within the church. Through Godly counsel and discernment, they help preserve unity.

“This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute… so they appointed elders in every church.” Acts 15:1-2

Biblical Qualifications

Elders are expected to live above reproach; lead their families well; be self-controlled, hospitable, and spiritually mature. Their lives reflect a pattern of godliness and a heart for serving others.

“Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task.”

1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:7-9
