Worship Leader

Alyssa Cowles

Alyssa was born to worship; her love for the Lord shines in everything she does. She is the 2nd of 3 generations at SouthGate and has literally grown up in the church. Her parents, Ron and Claire Troth, started attending the church when it was just a home Bible study, and Alyssa was the very first baby born into that growing congregation. Alyssa joined the worship team at the age of 15 and has served faithfully ever since.

Alyssa met her husband Ryan at SouthGate, and they are raising four children who all serve in various areas of ministry. Their oldest son graduated from 91st Psalm Christian School and now attends Grand Canyon University. The younger 3 children still attend 91st Psalm. Ryan and Alyssa work hard to instill in their children the importance of living out biblical truths—not just on Sundays, but every day—and doing all things to honor the Lord. A proud 91st Psalm graduate herself, Alyssa now teaches in our high school, pouring her heart into the next generation just as her teachers once did for her.

Alyssa believes that worship is a time of intimacy with God—a moment for reflection and an opportunity to give honor and glory to the Lord through music. She will be the first to tell you to sing out—even if it’s off key! God isn’t listening for perfection; He’s listening for your heart. For Alyssa, worship is never about performance—it’s about lifting your voice in love and surrender to the One who is worthy of it all. Often, during the quiet moments in between songs, the Lord will give her a word or message for someone in the congregation. As soon as you hear her say, “I don’t know who this is for” or “God placed this on my heart,” you can feel the tears welling up in your eyes, knowing that what follows will be impactful and from God. It’s not uncommon to hear multiple people after church say, “That was exactly what I needed to hear today,” or “I know that was a message for me.” God uses Alyssa in a mighty way with just a gentle nudge from the stage.

Ryan and Alyssa lead by example—living lives of faith, service, and love for God. Their servant hearts are evident in the way they lead Connect Groups, help at VBS, lead worship at women’s events, run sound for church events, or give technical support on Sunday mornings. Ryan doesn’t just meet the needs of the church today; he also looks ahead to prepare for the future. Before anyone had even heard the word COVID, Ryan had already put systems in place for streaming. Because of his forward thinking, SouthGate was ready to go live when many churches were still ordering cameras. They are both ready and willing to serve wherever they are needed at SouthGate.

With very active kids in sports and school events, Ryan and Alyssa are often seen zipping back and forth down Baseline Road in a minivan packed with members of the team on their way to the next match. When there is a break in the calendar or school is out, they’re off on family adventures, traveling by road or air to take in the sights of God’s beautiful creation. Alyssa has visited 46 states and has a goal to see them all by the time she turns 50. Their mission is to serve God wholeheartedly—at home, at church, and wherever He leads. Through their love for worship, dedication to ministry, and passion for living out biblical truth, Ryan and Alyssa continue to inspire others to follow Christ with the same joy, faith, and steadfast commitment.
